If it's been a while since you've been to the dentist — five, ten, fifteen years for some of our new patients — the unknown is half the anxiety. Here's exactly what your first visit at BrightSmile looks like, step by step. No surprises.
Before the appointment
You'll get a text and an email with intake forms 48 hours in advance. Fill them out at home in your pajamas with a coffee. We'll have everything ready when you walk in. If you have insurance, send us a photo of your card and we'll verify benefits before your visit so cost is clear.
When you arrive
Walk in, check in with the front desk. Most patients are taken back within 5 minutes. There are warm blankets in the waiting area if you tend to run cold, and a coffee and tea station. The office is intentionally bright — natural light, no fluorescent buzzing.
The exam itself
The first appointment runs 60–90 minutes. Here's the breakdown:
- 1Photos and X-rays (15 min). Digital photos of your smile and a low-radiation full set of X-rays. The X-ray dose is roughly one-tenth of what you'd get from a backyard sun-tan.
- 2Hygienist cleaning and assessment (30–45 min). A full periodontal assessment (we measure gum-pocket depth at every tooth) and a thorough cleaning. If it's been a long time, we may recommend a deeper cleaning instead — we'll talk you through what that means and why before doing anything.
- 3Doctor exam (10–15 min). One of our dentists comes in, reviews the X-rays with you, looks at every tooth, and gives you a written treatment plan if anything needs work.
The treatment plan conversation
This is the part our anxious patients dread the most. Here's our approach: we tell you the truth, divided into three buckets. (1) Work that needs to happen now — active decay, an existing crown about to fail, a tooth at risk. (2) Work that can wait but should happen in the next 6–12 months. (3) Cosmetic or optional work you might want someday but doesn't need a decision now. You leave with all three written down, with prices and insurance estimates.
What you decide
Nothing today, if you don't want. We don't book follow-up treatment at the cleaning visit unless you ask us to. Take the plan home, ask questions, sleep on it. We'll be here when you're ready.
Cost
If you have PPO insurance and we're in-network (most patients), the first visit typically runs $0–$50 out of pocket depending on your plan. Without insurance, our new-patient special is $99 for the exam, X-rays, and cleaning.
Anxiety options
If you're nervous, ask for nitrous oxide (laughing gas). It's safe, takes effect immediately, and wears off in minutes — you can drive home. We offer it for any visit and many of our patients ask for it just for cleanings. No judgment.
