NorthPeak service van on a Seattle street

About NorthPeak

One truck in Ballard. Eleven years later, still answering the phone.

NorthPeak Heating & Air was founded in 2014 by Tom Whitford with a beat-up Ford Transit, a NATE card, and a rule: we answer the phone, we show up when we say we will, and we leave the house cleaner than we found it. The rule hasn't moved.

The shop

Five trucks. One zip code. The same five faces.

“If I’d wanted to run twenty trucks I’d have started in Texas. We picked Seattle because the houses are old, the winters are weird, and the people remember who answered the phone in January.”
— Tom Whitford, founder

NorthPeak Heating & Air opened in October 2014 out of a 600-square-foot shop on Leary Way NW with a single van, a $7,400 line of credit, and a cellphone Tom answered himself for the first three years. The first call was a no-heat in Phinney Ridge on a 28-degree night in December. He drove over without a quote. The check was cut on the spot. The customer is still on the maintenance plan.

We deliberately stayed small. Five trucks is the cap. When a sixth call comes in during peak season we send it to one of two competitor shops we trust—and they send the same way to us when it’s their roof on fire. The math behind the cap is simple: a NATE-certified technician who owns his diagnosis is worth more than a fleet of techs who don’t.

Today we run service across Seattle, Bellevue, Kirkland, Renton, and Tacoma—9-minute average dispatch in-zone, 22-minute max for the outer Tacoma calls. We’ve installed more than 800 heat pumps under the Energy Trust and PSE rebate programs. We sit on the local Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor council. And the phone still rings to the same dispatch desk Tom built into the back of the Leary Way shop.

NorthPeak doesn’t advertise on billboards, doesn’t run radio, and doesn’t answer Yelp leads from out-of-state aggregators. Every new install comes from a neighbor, a referral, or the yard sign your cousin’s house had after we put in their furnace last fall.

Operating principles

Six things that haven’t changed since 2014.

A boutique HVAC shop only works if the rules are non-negotiable. These are ours.

We Answer The Phone

Dispatcher in three rings, day or night. After-hours forwards to the on-call lead—not a call center, not a queue.

Flat-Rate, Written, Before Work

No time-and-materials. Every quote handed to you in writing before a screwdriver turns. The price you sign is the price you pay.

Parts On The Truck

Capacitors, contactors, ignitors, flame sensors, draft motors. 90% of common-failure parts ride in the van so we fix it the first visit.

Five-Truck Cap

We refer overflow to two shops we trust rather than dilute the crew. Your tech is on our payroll, drives our truck, and is the one who comes back if anything's off.

Booties, Drop Cloths, Clean Site

Shoe covers at the door, drop cloths over flooring, every screw and zip-tie scrap walked out to the truck. Your house should look better when we leave.

Rebates Done In-House

Energy Trust of Oregon, PSE, Seattle City Light, Snohomish PUD. We do the paperwork. You sign once, we file, the check comes to you.

Meet the crew

The crew you'll actually meet.

We don’t subcontract installs. The technician at your door is on our payroll, drives our truck, and is the one who’ll come back in two years if anything ever rattles loose.

How a service call works

One call. A truck on your curb. A flat-rate quote in your hand.

No time-and-materials billing. No surprise diagnostic fees. No upsell scripts. Every NorthPeak service call follows the same four steps—the same way our founder Tom ran his first truck out of Ballard in 2014.

  1. 01

    You Call

Dispatcher answers in three rings, day or night. We confirm zip code, equipment make, and the symptom in under two minutes.

  2. 02

    Truck Dispatched

Branded service van rolls inside 9 minutes for in-zone Seattle and Bellevue calls. You get a tech name + truck photo by text.

  3. 03

    Diagnosis + Flat-Rate Quote

On-site diagnosis is free with any repair. We hand you a written flat-rate quote before we turn a screwdriver—no surprise time-and-materials.

  4. 04

    Repair + 2-Year Warranty

Parts on the truck for 90% of common failures. Every repair carries a 2-year parts & labor warranty. Every install carries 10 years on the equipment.

★★★★★
Furnace died at 6am with two toddlers in the house. Mike was on the curb in 22 minutes, had the ignitor in his truck, and we had heat by 7:30. Charged exactly what he quoted.
★★★★★
Got three bids on a heat pump. NorthPeak was the only crew who measured our ductwork before quoting and who told us the Energy Trust rebate would cover $1,800 of it. They were right.
★★★★★
AC stopped cooling during the August heat dome. Same-day call, capacitor swap, $284 flat. The tech wore booties in the house and actually answered my question about MERV ratings.
