Growth marketing for CBD and hemp wellness brands

Most cannabinoid inventory is refused by the ad networks, so a first order usually starts with someone verifying you: hunting the certificate of analysis, checking whether hemp-derived product ships to their state, decoding full spectrum against isolate. We build the surface that answers them first.

Where the demand is

How CBD / Wellness buyers actually search

Almost nobody arrives at a CBD site ready to buy. They arrive suspicious. The searches that precede a first order are verification searches: people looking up whether a brand publishes certificates of analysis, whether hemp-derived cannabinoids are legal where they live, what full spectrum means next to broad spectrum and isolate, and whether the milligram figure on the label matches what a lab actually found. A brand that answers those questions on its own domain intercepts the research; a brand that does not gets read about on a forum instead, in a thread it has no say in.

Geography constrains this category in a way it does not constrain most online retail. Cannabinoid rules differ state to state and change mid-year, shipping restrictions follow, and a meaningful slice of demand is people trying to find a local stockist rather than order online. That makes a stockist locator, per-state shipping clarity and a real address on the site load-bearing commercial pages, not legal housekeeping. Retail partners search too, and they search differently: wholesale terms, minimum order questions, white-label queries.

Repeat purchase is where the money is, and it is earned by the same trust artefacts that won the first order. Buyers come back to look up the batch code on the tin they already own. Publishing that lookup, keeping old batch records live, and writing product education that describes the product rather than what it might do for a body is the whole discipline of the category. Marketing copy that drifts into claims is not just a compliance risk, it is what gets a payment processor or a platform account pulled.

The keyword clusters we build around

  • Verification and provenancePeople checking certificates of analysis, batch codes, extraction method and hemp sourcing before they trust a brand. We build these into indexable pages rather than a PDF dump.
  • Format and spectrum comparisonTincture against gummy against topical, full spectrum against broad spectrum against isolate. Comparison content that describes composition and format, never an outcome.
  • Legality and shipping by stateSearchers asking what ships where and what is permitted locally. Answering plainly removes the single biggest reason a cart is abandoned in this category.
  • Stockist and near-me demandShoppers who want to buy the same day from a shelf. Locator pages and retail partner listings capture demand a national-only store cannot serve.
  • Wholesale and white labelRetailers and formulators searching supplier terms. A separate wholesale track keeps that buyer out of a consumer checkout flow built for one tin.
The campaign

Three ways we go get the traffic

Local SEO, AI-assistant visibility and paid media, run by the agency team that has been doing it since long before WorkspaceCMS existed.

Local SEO

A batch code is the most searched string a hemp brand owns, and on most sites it resolves to a PDF behind a lookup form. We publish each certificate of analysis as a crawlable record tied to the SKUs it covers, so the tin already in someone's hand has a page. Around that sit the pages this category converts on: per-state shipping and legality, extraction method and hemp sourcing, spectrum and format comparisons written to composition, and a stockist locator for the shopper who wants it off a shelf today. Wholesale and white-label queries get their own track.

AI search visibility

Ask an assistant whether a hemp brand is trustworthy and it will not repeat wellness adjectives; it looks for something checkable. Being cited by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or a Google AI Overview here means a stated cannabinoid profile per serving in structured product data, batch and lab records as readable pages rather than scans, a named extraction method and hemp source, and a legality page written state by state. Assistants are already cautious about cannabinoids, and the brands they name are the ones whose facts trace back to a document.

Paid media

Paid in this vertical starts from what is even purchasable. The major search and social networks restrict or refuse ingestible cannabinoid advertising, the approvals that exist are jurisdiction-bound and revocable, and an account can go down over one SKU description. The placements that behave are the ones outside that inventory: creator and affiliate relationships, sponsorships in cannabis and hemp trade media, retargeting your own list, and directories that accept the category. What usually goes wrong is a brand pouring creative budget into a channel quietly disapproving every asset, so we establish what is achievable for your specific product line first.

Campaigns are an add-on to a WorkspaceCMS plan and start from $499/mo. The plan itself is a monthly subscription. The build is included, the platform is not free. Local SEO campaigns are scoped to single and multi-location businesses rather than national or global SEO. Paid search management covers service businesses rather than online stores; ad spend is billed by Google or Meta directly to your own account. Full campaign scope → · Plan pricing →

What gets in the way

Six things that hold CBD / Wellness sites back

01

The category is barred from most paid search inventory

Ingestible cannabinoid products are restricted or refused outright across the major ad networks, and approvals that do exist are narrow, jurisdiction-bound and revocable. A CBD brand cannot buy its way to volume the way a service business can, which is why the organic and AI-citation surface carries the growth plan here.

02

Every persuasive sentence is a compliance decision

The copy that would convert fastest is the copy that describes a health outcome, and that copy is the one a regulator reads first. We write to composition, sourcing, testing and format, and we build the review and education surface so third parties carry the parts we are not permitted to say.

03

COAs sit in PDFs that search engines learn nothing from

Most brands upload lab reports as scanned files behind a lookup form. Search engines and AI assistants extract almost nothing from that, so the single strongest trust asset a brand owns contributes nothing to visibility. Batch records need to exist as crawlable pages that reference the products they belong to.

04

Age gates and interstitials break crawling and conversion

Age verification is necessary and it is frequently implemented in a way that hides content from crawlers, tanks page speed, or forces a returning customer through the gate on every visit. Getting the gate to satisfy the requirement without swallowing the page is a real engineering task.

05

State-by-state rules move faster than the site does

A shipping restriction changes and the site keeps advertising the product into that state for months. Without a single place that governs where a product may go, the storefront quietly contradicts the legal position and a customer discovers it at the checkout screen.

06

Forums and marketplaces own the comparison conversation

Buyers compare brands on Reddit threads, review aggregators and marketplace listings before they visit any brand site. If the brand has not published its own comparison and sourcing material, the only voice in that comparison belongs to someone else, and it is usually a competitor's affiliate.

Questions

CBD / Wellness marketing, answered

Why do our lab reports need to be pages rather than PDF downloads?

A scanned certificate is close to opaque to crawlers and assistants, so the strongest trust asset the brand owns contributes nothing to visibility. Each batch record is published as a readable page linked to the SKUs it covers, with the signed original still downloadable for anyone who wants the document itself.

Can the storefront stop showing products that cannot ship to a buyer's state?

Yes. Shipping eligibility is governed in one place and applied to listings, cart and checkout, so a hemp-derived SKU restricted in a state stops being advertised into it rather than failing at the payment screen. Keeping the underlying rule set current is a joint call with your counsel.

Does an age gate hurt our organic visibility?

It does when it is built as a full interstitial that crawlers meet before any content, or one that forces a returning customer through verification on every visit. We implement the gate so the requirement is satisfied while product and batch pages stay crawlable and quick to load.

How do we compete when forum threads and review aggregators outrank our own domain?

By publishing the comparison yourself: spectrum against spectrum, extraction method, hemp source, milligrams per serving against what the lab found. Those threads win because almost nobody in the category writes plainly, and your own sourcing material gives forum participants something accurate to link when the brand comes up.

Is a stockist locator worth building if we mostly sell online?

If the product sits on shelves anywhere, yes. A real share of cannabinoid demand is someone who wants it the same day, and that near-me searching goes to whoever publishes a locator. It also gives retail partners a visible reason to keep carrying the line.
